The Medication Everyone’s Talking About

You’ve seen the headlines. You’ve heard people talking about Ozempic and Wegovy. Maybe your friendlost 30 pounds and looks amazing. Maybe you’re wondering if it’s too good to be true.

Here’s what you need to know: GLP-1 medications are real, they’re FDA-approved, and they work. But they’re not magic pills. And they’re definitely not right for everyone.

At Alpine Wellness in Reno, we use GLP-1 medications as part of a complete weight loss program, not as a quick fix. Because the truth is, these medications work best when your body is actually ready for them.

What Are GLP-1 Medications?

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1. It’s a hormone your body already makes naturally after you eat. It tells your brain “okay, we’re full now” and helps regulate your blood sugar.

The problem? Most people don’t make enough of it. Or their body doesn’t respond to it properly anymore.

GLP-1 medications are synthetic versions of this hormone, but much stronger. They work by:

  • Making you feel full faster when you eat
  • Keeping you satisfied longer between meals
  • Slowing down how fast food leaves your stomach
  • Helping your pancreas release insulin when your blood sugar goes up
  • Reducing those constant food cravings that make dieting miserable

It’s not about willpower anymore. It’s about fixing the signals your brain isn’t getting naturally.

The Most Common GLP-1 Weight Loss Medications

Semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic)

Semaglutide was the first GLP-1 medication to really change the weight loss game. It’s a once-weekly injection that you do at home.

Wegovy is FDA-approved specifically for weight loss. It comes in pre-filled pens with doses ranging from 0.25mg up to 2.4mg.

Ozempic is the same medication, but it’s FDA-approved for diabetes. Some doctors prescribe it off-label for weight loss, especially when Wegovy is hard to get.

Clinical trials showed people lost an average of 10-15% of their body weight over 68 weeks. That means if you weigh 200 pounds, you might lose 20-30 pounds. Some people lose more. Some lose less. Everyone’s different.

The side effects are usually manageable – mostly nausea, constipation, or diarrhea, especially when you first start or increase your dose. Most people adjust after a few weeks.

Tirzepatide (Mounjaro and Zepbound)

Tirzepatide is newer than semaglutide, and the results are even better for a lot of people.

It works on two pathways instead of one – both GLP-1 and GIP receptors. That dual action seems to make a big difference.

Zepbound is FDA-approved for weight loss. Mounjaro is approved for diabetes but prescribed off-label for weight loss sometimes.

Clinical trials showed average weight loss of 15-20% of body weight. Some people in the studies lost 20-25% or more. That’s the kind of results you’d normally only see with bariatric surgery.

It’s also a once-weekly injection. The side effects are similar to semaglutide – mostly digestive issues that usually get better with time.

How GLP-1 Medications Work in Real Life

Let’s talk about what it’s actually like to take these medications.

Most people notice changes within the first week or two. Food just doesn’t sound as good. You get full halfway through your meal. The constant thinking about food starts to quiet down.

One of our patients described it like this: “It’s like someone turned down the volume on my hunger. I can still eat. I still enjoy food. But I’m not obsessed with it anymore.”

That’s what these medications do. They give your brain the signals it should have been getting all along.

But here’s what they don’t do: They don’t fix your thyroid. They don’t balance your hormones. They don’t address insulin resistance or metabolic dysfunction.

That’s why we test for all of that before we start you on GLP-1 medications. Because if your testosterone is in the basement or your thyroid is barely functioning, the medication will work better once we fix those problems first.

The Side Effects Everyone Worries About

Let’s be honest, you’ve heard the stories. Someone’s cousin got horribly sick. Someone read about serious complications online.

Here’s the reality:

Common side effects that usually improve:

  • Nausea (especially in the first few weeks)
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Feeling very full after eating
  • Decreased appetite
  • Fatigue

Less common but important to know:

  • Gallbladder problems (more common with rapid weight loss)
  • Low blood sugar (if you’re also on diabetes medications)
  • Acid reflux
  • Vomiting (usually if dose increases too fast)

Rare but serious:

  • Pancreatitis
  • Thyroid tumors (seen in rodent studies, not confirmed in humans)
  • Severe allergic reactions

This is why physician supervision matters. We start you at a low dose. We increase slowly. We monitor you closely. And if you’re having side effects that don’t improve, we adjust your treatment.

Most people tolerate these medications well once their body adjusts. The key is not rushing the process.

What GLP-1 Medications Don’t Do

These medications are powerful tools. But they’re not miracle cures.

They don’t:

  • Fix underlying hormone imbalances
  • Cure insulin resistance (though they help)
  • Build muscle (you’ll need protein and strength training for that)
  • Work forever if you have major metabolic dysfunction
  • Replace the need for good nutrition
  • Guarantee you’ll keep the weight off if you stop taking them

This is why our approach at Alpine Wellness is different. We use GLP-1 medications as part of a complete program that addresses your whole metabolic picture.

Who Shouldn’t Take GLP-1 Medications

These medications aren’t safe for everyone.

You probably shouldn’t take them if you:

  • Are pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • Have a history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2 syndrome
  • Have severe gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying)
  • Have a history of pancreatitis
  • Have severe kidney disease
  • Are underweight or have an eating disorder

This is why the consultation and medical history review matters. We’re not going to put you on something that could hurt you just because you want to lose weight.
