What Causes Erectile Dysfunction?

ED isn’t just about blood flow, though that’s often part of it. Several things can cause or contribute to erectile problems:

Low Testosterone

This is one of the most common causes we see. When your testosterone drops, so does your sex drive and your ability to get and maintain erections. It’s not just about desire. Testosterone affects the physical mechanics too.

Poor Blood Flow

Erections depend on blood flow. When blood vessels get narrowed or damaged, getting hard becomes difficult. This can happen because of age, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, or smoking.

Nerve Damage

Diabetes, certain medications, or past surgeries (especially prostate surgery) can damage the nerves needed for erections.

Stress and Anxiety

Your brain plays a big role in sexual function. Stress, anxiety, depression, or relationship issues can all cause or worsen ED. And once you’ve had a few bad experiences, the anxiety about it happening again can become its own problem.

Side Effects from Medications

Blood pressure medications, antidepressants, and certain other drugs can interfere with erections. If you started having problems after beginning a new medication, that could be why.

How We Treat Erectile Dysfunction

We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all treatment. What works depends on what’s causing your ED. That’s why we start with testing to figure out the actual problem, then create a treatment plan designed for you.

Testosterone Replacement Therapy

If your ED is caused by low testosterone, and for a lot of guys, it is, testosterone replacement therapy can make a huge difference. We test your levels first, then create a plan to get them back into healthy range.

Most men notice improvements in sex drive within a few weeks. Erection quality typically improves within 4-6 weeks as testosterone levels stabilize.

GAINSWave Therapy

GAINSWave uses low-intensity sound waves to improve blood flow to the penis. It’s non-invasive—no surgery, no needles. The treatment stimulates growth of new blood vessels and breaks down plaque buildup in existing ones.

How it works: You come in for a series of short treatments (usually 6-12 sessions). The sound waves are applied directly to the penis. Most guys describe it as mildly uncomfortable but not painful.

Results: Many men see improvement in erection strength and duration. Some guys who haven’t responded well to pills like Viagra notice GAINSWave helps those medications work better. Benefits can last a year or more.

P-Shot (Priapus Shot)

The P-Shot uses your own platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to promote healing and improve function. We draw a small amount of your blood, separate out the growth factors, and inject them into specific areas of the penis.

What it does: The growth factors stimulate tissue repair and blood vessel growth. This can improve erection quality, increase sensitivity, and even add some size in some cases. The procedure takes about 30 minutes.

ED Medications

Medications like sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), and vardenafil (Levitra) work by increasing blood flow to the penis. They’re effective for many men, especially when ED is caused by blood flow issues.

We can prescribe these medications and help you figure out which one works best for you. Some guys prefer the longer-lasting effect of Cialis. Others like the quick action of Viagra. These medications tend to work better when combined with treatments that address the root cause, like testosterone therapy or GAINSWave.

Combination Approach

Often, the best results are achieved by combining treatments. For example:

  • Testosterone therapy + ED medications
  • GAINSWave + P-Shot for maximum blood flow improvement
  • Testosterone therapy + GAINSWave for long-term improvement

We’ll recommend the combination that makes sense for your situation.

Our Process: How We Help

Step 1: Honest Conversation and Testing

We understand talking about ED isn’t comfortable. But we have these conversations every day, and there’s zero judgment here. We need to know what’s going on so we can help.

We’ll ask about:

  • How long you’ve been having problems
  • Whether it’s consistent or just sometimes
  • Other symptoms (low energy, low sex drive, mood changes)
  • Your medical history and current medications
  • Lifestyle factors (stress, sleep, exercise, diet)

We then run blood work to check testosterone, thyroid function, blood sugar, cholesterol, and other markers that can impact sexual function.

Step 2: Your Custom Treatment Plan

Once we have your results, we’ll sit down and go over what we found. We’ll explain what’s causing your ED and which treatments are most likely to help.

You’ll understand exactly what each treatment does, how long it takes to work, and what results you can expect. Then we build your plan together.

Step 3: Treatment and Follow-Up

We start your treatment and check in regularly to see how things are going. If something isn’t working as well as we’d like, we adjust. The goal is to get you results that stick.

What You Can Expect from Treatment

Results vary depending on what’s causing your ED and which treatments you use, but here’s a general timeline:

ED Medications: Work within 30-60 minutes when taken. Effects last 4-6 hours (Viagra, Levitra) or up to 36 hours (Cialis).

Testosterone Therapy: Sex drive often improves within 2-3 weeks. Erection quality typically improves within 4-6 weeks as levels stabilize.

GAINSWave: Many men notice improvement after 3-4 sessions. Full results develop over 2-3 months. Benefits can last a year or longer.

P-Shot: Results develop gradually over 2-3 months as new tissue grows. Peak benefits around 3-4 months. Can last 12-18 months or more.
